Evans Eyes Improvement

Jonny Evans says that it is up to United's players to get improved results with better performances.

The Reds defender, speaking ahead of Wednesday night's Champions League meeting with Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, is targeting a win over the Spanish opponents following the 1-1 draw with Southampton last Saturday.

United are unbeaten in the Champions League so far this season, while the Spanish visitors have lost both their Group A games, but Evans knows his side need to kick on.

"We're disappointed, yes. Our own performance hasn't been up to scratch, especially in possession. We've been quite sloppy and we haven't been controlling games as well as we would have liked. I think Southampton probably controlled the game a bit better than we did.

"The onus is on us. We know we haven't played well enough as individuals or as a team. We want to make sure we raise our performance and produce better performances."

Nemanja Vidic's calf injury saw him miss last Saturday's draw with the Saints, and although manager David Moyes reported that both the club captain and Rio Ferdinand were making good progress with their respective knocks, Evans could well line up in central defence against Wednesday's opponents. It's a prospect that does not faze the 25-year-old Northern Ireland international.

"There have been times over the last few years where all the centre backs have had their injury problems and I've stepped into the role," Evans added. "As a player you want to play as many games as you can and as a centre back you want to be a leader."
