Evans Heralds Set-piece Threat

Jonny Evans believes Manchester United's set-pieces are becoming a real weapon in the champions' armoury.

While there was much to admire about the goals scored on the counter-attack against Bayer Leverkusen, two of the strikes came from dead-ball situations, including Evans' own effort.

Patrice Evra also got on the scoresheet at Cardiff City from a corner and the Reds have looked a threat from set-pieces all season.

"I think our set-pieces, especially the deliveries, have been fantastic," enthused Evans to MUTV. "It makes a big difference. I also think the lads are attacking the ball well.

"Although my goal was a tap-in, Pat got his head to it first and he scored at the weekend too. He has got great spring for the size of him and got the first touch. Wayne Rooney volleyed, the keeper spilled it and it was good getting to the ball first. It shows our determination to do that."

Evans has also paid his own tribute to 40-year-old colleague Ryan Giggs, who seems to be getting better with age judging by his flawless performance in Germany. The Northern Ireland international was only three years old when Giggs made his United debut in 1991.

"Growing up Manchester United-daft, there are videos of me at Christmas opening up posters of Ryan and things like that," he recalled. "I can remember, growing up, that he was a big star. It's crazy to think I've been playing in the same team as him for about six seasons now.

"There is no reason why he can't keep going, if he keeps producing performances. Maybe it takes him a little while to get going before he starts producing his best form, like he did the other night. But the experience he has, deep down inside, means he knows not to push himself too much.

"He waits for the right time and it's a good thing for him to have that. Other players may be panicking about their performances but I don't think he has to worry about his performances. He just has to go out and play the game as he knows how and it just seems to work for him."
