Vidics Cup Revelation
Nemanja Vidic is hoping Manchester United can reach the Capital One Cup final without him after revealing he gave his 2006 winners' medal away to Giuseppe Rossi.
The Serbian came off the bench in the 4-0 victory against Wigan Athletic, soon after arriving from Spartak Moscow eight years ago, but felt Italy striker Rossi was more deserving of the prize, having started the three games before the semi-finals during the cup run.
Current Fiorentina forward Rossi, who had only recently turned 19 at the time, did not make the bench in Cardiff with Sir Alex Ferguson instead preferring to give January recruits Patrice Evra and Vidic an important first taste of glory with the club.
Following the successes in the competition in 2009 and 2010, the skipper still has a chance of adding another League Cup gong to his collection even though he is now suspended for the semi-final second leg with Sunderland on Wednesday.
"It was a great match against Wigan," he recalled in an exclusive interview with MUTV and ManUtd.com which took place before Sunday's game at Chelsea. "We played really well. I came on for the last few minutes and it was a good experience. We scored four goals and could have scored five or six. We played really good football and it was important to win that trophy because we hadn't won a trophy for nearly two years. After that, we started to win things again.
"I only played for a few minutes in the final and got the medal and, afterwards, even though it was a nice feeling and I felt part of the team, I gave my medal to Giuseppe Rossi because I felt it would be better to give it to someone who had played more minutes than me in the competition. He deserved it."
In this year's competition, the Black Cats hold a 2-1 advantage from the first meeting two weeks ago, when Vidic headed United's goal. Manchester City will almost certainly lie in wait in the final, on 2 March, and the skipper is confident United will be there to take on their local neighbours.
"Obviously a trophy is important for the club, for the manager and the players. You don't want to finish the season without a trophy, especially at a club like United," he added.
"We have an opportunity to get to the final now. We didn't have a great result in the first match, but we're playing at home and I believe we can get a good result and get to Wembley, and then we'll see what happens."
Vidic added that the players are determined to give the fans something to celebrate and repay their loyalty, particularly this season.
"We cannot complain about anything about the supporters - they have been really good with us this season. I have said this before, but especially away from home, we always have a great support and at home as well. They have been magnificent," added Vidic.
"We can hear their frustration at times at home but sometimes we have to accept that teams will come to Old Trafford and put everyone behind the ball, make it difficult for us and look to play on the counter-attack. We know the fans always want to see goals and that's what we want as well. Hopefully we can start games better and score a goal in the first few minutes [on Wednesday]."
