Macari Urges Reds To Attack

Former Manchester United striker Lou Macari believes the Reds must have a greater attacking presence to overturn the Reds' Champions League last 16 first leg defeat to Olympiacos on Wednesday.

Having watched United's 3-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool on Sunday, the MUTV pundit said he would choose Danny Welbeck, who came on as a substitute against the Merseysiders, in place of cup-tied Juan Mata.

"On Wednesday night, I would play with Danny Welbeck, [Robin] van Persie, [Wayne] Rooney and [Adnan] Januzaj, four attack-minded players, because we need to score goals," Macari explained to MUTV. "We need to get ourselves back into that tie, and then we obviously need to score another couple to qualify.

"It's not a gamble," he added. "Let's hope we're sitting here on Wednesday night, having forgotten about the Liverpool game, and looking forward to the draw for the next round of the Champions League."

Two penalties from Steven Gerrard and a late Luis Suarez strike gave Liverpool victory in Manchester, as the Reds succumbed to a fifth league defeat on home soil this season.

When asked whether or not United might perform better away from home in the coming games, Macari insisted that there is no better place to be than Old Trafford, and praised the fans for their continued support.

"Old Trafford is the best place to be," he said. "You're here with 70,000 supporting you and cheering you on, and I would say the crowd have stuck behind them this season. The Stretford End was fantastic. There were one or two groans because we were playing Liverpool, but this is the best place to be."
