Reds Reach 50m On Facebook

Manchester United are today celebrating the landmark achievement of reaching 50 million followers on Facebook – the fastest of any sports organisation on the planet to do so.

Launched in July 2010, Manchester United's Facebook page has become an essential destination for tens of millions of United fans around the globe as the place to get all the latest club news and content, and to engage directly with the club and fellow supporters.

With a truly worldwide fanbase, United can call on support from all corners of the planet including countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, Egypt and the United Kingdom, all represented in the ten largest Manchester United Facebook follower territories.

To mark this momentous achievement the club is embarking on a series of initiatives on its page to thank fans including celebratory videos, legendary images and an inspirational and eye-catching mosaic which fans are being encouraged to sign up to be part of.

Manchester United's Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, said: "This is a fantastic achievement and one that the club is extremely proud of. Our millions of passionate fans around the world help to preserve Manchester United's status as a global leader and innovator in its field.

"With this in mind, we are constantly looking how we can improve and expand our offering to our fans, making sure that as many of our 659 million followers across the globe can get ever closer to the club they love."

This latest Facebook milestone now takes Manchester United's fanbase to 65 million followers across social media platforms that also include Twitter, Google+, Instagram and Chinese channels Sina and Tencent Weibo, amongst others.

Earlier this year, Manchester United and Google+ embarked on a world-first effort to give fans the opportunity to cheer on the team virtually, appearing via a live Google+ Hangout - the free, multi-person video call feature – on Old Trafford's pioneering digital hoardings.
