Reds Recall First-ever Kits
Everyone remembers the first football shirt they owned – but which kits did the Manchester United players don before any others? We quizzed a host of Reds at a photo-shoot for our new 2014/15 home strip to learn more…
Michael Carrick: "It was probably a Newcastle one that my dad bought for me. They’ve changed a lot since then, it wasn’t so long ago that they were quite big and baggy. Quite heavy as well! Now there’s a lot of research and thought that goes into it. It keeps you as dry as possible and fits well."
Chicharito: "It’s difficult to remember but I think it was from one of my old clubs in Mexico, Chivas Guadalajara I think. I don’t know if my father bought me that one, or if he asked another player for it."
Chris Smalling: "I think it was an England kit that my mum bought for me one Christmas. I’ve still got it to this day. I didn’t have anyone’s name on the shirt, me and my brother both had ‘Smalling’ on it."
Jonny Evans: "My first United kit was actually the one that had a little button. I think it was a black collar, but it had the stadium design sort of faded in - that was my first kit, I loved it."
Phil Jones: "It would probably have been the old Blackburn Rovers away shirt, the gold one that was worn from 1998 to 2000. I had my own name on the back."
Ashley Young: "Unfortunately it was an Arsenal one! Ian Wright was my hero as a youngster so I got it because of him."
