Rooney: Our Season Starts Next Week

Wayne Rooney has vowed that Manchester United will get the campaign up and running at Sunderland next Sunday after the false start against Swansea City.

The newly-appointed skipper scored but saw the Welsh outfit register their first-ever league win at Old Trafford thanks to a 2-1 scoreline. As he expects a tough week on the training ground, the striker is adamant the team must bounce back from the disappointment.

"We've got eight days now until the next game," he told MUTV. "We need to prepare right and get this result out of our system. We start our season from there.

"It's a game we were desperate to win to kickstart our season but we haven't done that. We have to go back during the week and look at how the game went, try to improve and make sure we get it right for the next game.

"It was a disastrous start for us, but we have to move on. We're not happy, the manager's not happy. We'll have to go through what went wrong during the week. We'll do that. I thought today we didn't play as well together as a team as we can do. We have to put that right."

Rooney accepts the performance against the Swans was sub-standard but is convinced the Reds will rediscover their pre-season form at the Stadium of Light next Sunday.

"It wasn't good enough," he conceded. "[They were] two sloppy goals although I think they only had two chances and scored both of them. But we have to defend better and create more chances. It's disappointing to lose your first game of the season. We have to bounce back from this.

"I can't see why [it was so edgy]. We've played with a lot of confidence throughout pre-season. There were a few players making their first appearance - or players who haven't played many games - playing from the start today, but we're all professional players. We have to do better. Today is disappointing. We have to move on from this and look for a positive result next week.

"I always felt once we scored we'd go on and win the game. To be honest, it felt like that out there. We were in control of the game but gave a silly goal away. Then we were chasing the game again and they made it difficult. We have to learn from this quickly and bounce back quickly."

Rooney will not cherish his first match as permanent captain of the club as he is only concerned with the team performance.

"It was a proud moment but a disappointing result," he stated. "It's not one I'll look back on and remember with fond memories. You always want to win. It's a nice moment, yeah, but I'm disappointed we lost."
