Jones: Let's End The Season In Style

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is confident the Reds can achieve a positive result against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday and finish off the team's home campaign in style.

Louis van Gaal's men require just one more point from the two remaining games to make absolutely sure of qualification for next season’s Champions League, (providing Liverpool take maximum points from their last two matches) but Jones is keen to collect all three against Arsene Wenger’s men.

"We know they’re a good team," he told MUTV. "We know what they pose, what threats they have, but we’ve worked on it all week in training and we need to win it – it’s our last game at home this season and we want to go out with a bang."

The defender hopes a victory on Sunday could eventually see United finish above the Gunners - who slipped to a 1-0 home defeat to Swansea City in their last outing - should they fail to pick up maximum points at the Emirates Stadium in their remaining two games.

"We need to make sure we beat Arsenal on Sunday," Jones added. "It’s an important game, and we then have to hope that they drop some points in the last games of the season and we beat Hull as well.”

If those things materialised, United would finish third and subsequently avoid the preliminary play-off stage of the Champions League, but Jones says the players have set higher targets for the 2015/16 campaign.

“I think the minimum we expected this season was to finish fourth but next season is going to be a big season for us," he stated. "We need to push on and certainly challenge for that title, there’s no reason why we can’t.

“When you look at the season, we had a slow start, we drew against Burnley, Sunderland away, and a few other games in the early part of the campaign. If we could have just turned them into three points then we’d be sitting here now challenging for the title.

“They’re the fine lines that matter. Next season, we’ve got to hit the ground running, but we’ve got to finish this season off first and finish it off strongly.”
