Revealed - Man. United's Fastest Player in 2014/15
There was some debate around who was the fastest player at Manchester United last season, with a number of the first-teamers having their say on the matter.
Lightning-quick forward James Wilson initially revealed GPS tracking devices indicated Chris Smalling was the quickest during drills at the Aon Training Complex.
A wide range of answers were given to the question by other stars with Adnan Januzaj and Luke Shaw forwarding Wayne Rooney as a leading candidate. Data collated by analysts Tracab supports this view, with the skipper posting three of the top five highest speeds during last term's Barclays Premier League campaign.
The England centre-forward clocked 35 kilometres per hour during the win over Aston Villa in April, when he also scored a marvellous goal in a 3-1 victory. It was the only time a United man hit that mark but he came close to matching it in the following fixture, the derby triumph over Manchester City.
Ashley Young clocked his top speed in the final home game against Arsenal to record the third-highest figure and, following another Rooney entry at Newcastle United, Luke Shaw, who was described as "rapid" by Phil Jones, is next on the list for his 34.25 km/h mark against Chelsea.
Smalling and Wilson did achieve the highest speed in individual matches, as did a whole host of colleagues, but it has been proved that Rooney is the current speed king at Old Trafford with the official tracking data of the Premier League using six cameras within the stadium, unique software and visual recognition to capture the information. Perhaps new boy Memphis Depay can challenge for the honour next season!
