Cascarino: Rooney Needs Strike partner

Wayne Rooney needs a strike partner in order to rediscover his goal-scoring touch, says former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino.

Rooney is yet to score in his first three games of the season for Manchester United, but manager Louis van Gaal has decided not to sign a striker during the transfer window so far.

United's reported target Pedro completed a move to Chelsea on Thursday, and Cascarino believes Rooney needs a partner up front if he is to start scoring again.

"I feel sorry for Wayne," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"As every year goes by, you get a bit older and Wayne's not as quick as when he was 21, he's a creator and a goalscorer.

"I think he needs a partner, he needs someone to play alongside who is going to help him."

Rooney is confident the goals will come for him, but Cascarino feels van Gaal needs to consider changing the style of play if his captain is to be more effective in front of goal.

"Wayne struggled in the opening couple of games, but I sympathise with him, because the role and the way United have played in the two premier league games hasn't suited Wayne Rooney either." He said.

"He's playing with his back to goal nearly all the game. He's never getting into the 18-yard-box, six-yard-box - getting on the end of things - having people make a run for you to create.

"I think Wayne's job's been made harder."
