Champions League: Guide To United's Group

All you need to know about United’s Champions League group-stage opponents…

PSV EINDHOVEN

How did they qualify? The Dutch side secured their domestic title to enter this season's Champions League automatically, a feat that was accomplished with the help of United's new signing Memphis, who scored 22 goals in all competitions.

Who's their boss? PSV are managed by former Netherlands international Phillip Cocu, who last faced United during his playing days. The midfielder was part of Louis van Gaal’s line-up for Barcelona, when the Catalan club drew 3-3 with United at Old Trafford in the 1998/99 group stage.

When will we play them? Van Gaal's men will travel to his native Holland for the opening Champions League group match on Tuesday 15 September, with the return fixture at Old Trafford set for Wednesday 25 November.

Have we played them before? The Reds have played PSV on four separate occasions. The first two came in the 1984/85 season, when Ron Atkinson’s men progressed to the third round of the UEFA Cup thanks to a 1-0 aggregate victory. Then, in the first group stage of 2000/01, United suffered a 3-1 reverse at the Phillips Stadion, before flipping the result on its head and bagging an important win at Old Trafford.

Any other connections? Memphis is the latest player to join the Reds from PSV, following Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ji-sung Park.

CSKA MOSCOW

How did they qualify? Like United, the men from the Luzhniki Stadium had to play a third-round qualifying tie. CSKA made it through only after staging an eye-catching three-goal comeback to beat Sporting Lisbon 4-3 on aggregate.

Who's their boss? Leonid Slutsky is the current man at the helm of the 12-time Russian Premier League winners and was also recently appointed national team boss on a short-term deal.

When will we play them? The tricky trip to Moscow awaits United on Wednesday 21 October, before CSKA head to Manchester two weeks later on Tuesday 3 November.

Have we played them before? Our only two previous games against CSKA came in the 2009/10 group stage when the sides drew 3-3 at Old Trafford before Antonio Valencia's goal sealed a 1-0 away win.

Any other connections? CSKA’s Luzhniki Stadium holds many fond memories for Reds all over the world as the venue for United’s 2008 Champions League triumph.

WOLFSBURG

How did they qualify? Die Wolfe achieved automatic qualification for the tournament thanks to their Bundesliga runners-up spot in 2014/15. They also won the DFB-Pokal Cup and beat league champions Bayern Munich on penalties in the DFL-Super Cup, Germany's equivalent of the Community Shield.

Who's their boss? Dieter Hecking has been in charge of Wolfsburg since December 2012.

When will we play them? Wolfsburg will visit Old Trafford on Wednesday 30 September, before United finish the group-stage campaign with a trip to Germany on Tuesday 8 December.

Have we played them before? Yes, in the 2009/10 group stage after Wolfsburg won their only Bundesliga title to date. Michael Owen scored a hat-trick as the Reds won 3-1 away; Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs were on target in a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Any other connections? Steve McClaren - United's assistant manager when the Reds won the Champions League and of course the Treble in 1998/99 - was Wolfsburg boss from May 2010 to February 2011.
