Shaw Excited By Partnership With Memphis
Luke Shaw is confident of building an exciting partnership with Memphis Depay after both players excelled during Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Club Brugge at Old Trafford.
The two players have forged a solid friendship in recent months and appear to be gelling on the pitch, having impressed while playing on the left wing against Aston Villa and then Brugge.
Although Shaw was excellent throughout the midweek Champions League encounter, looking sharp and match fit, it was Memphis who stole the headlines following two excellent first-half goals and a timely assist for Marouane Fellaini's crucial injury-time header.
During a post-match interview with MUTV, Shaw praised the Dutchman and spoke of a positive alliance. “Of course I am really happy for him today," he said. "He is working so hard in training; he was really trying to get that first goal. Now he’s off the mark, hopefully it can bring him many more goals.
“I think our relationship is starting to build up, we have played a couple of games together and I am starting to understand how he wants to play. It is great to be playing with him, he can beat a man and he likes the attacking support from me as well – which is something I like to do.”
United fell behind on Tuesday via a Michael Carrick own goal but quickly came from behind thanks to those two strikes from Memphis. A 2-1 win wouldn’t have been the best result to take to Belgium, though, and Shaw believes the Reds secured a telling advantage by scoring a third goal.
“We knew that we needed one more goal to make us feel more comfortable when it comes to the next game but, overall, we are very happy with how it ended,” explained Luke. “The Fellaini goal was massive for us, we are glad we got that and now we can look forward to next week.
“You have seen what they can produce,” Shaw continued. “A couple of times we were unaware they could do that but it is massive that we take what we did in the last 10 or 15 minutes into the next game and start well. Hopefully we can get an early goal that could change the tie from there on.”
Of course, the first leg against Brugge was Shaw’s first-ever match in the Champions League and the 20-year-old England international enjoyed every single second of it. “The best bit about it was the music at the start, you always love the music, but it was great to get my first taste of it,” he said.
“I want to win so much next week, to get involved in the Champions League, so I am hoping we can do that. I know what it is all about, the Champions League, I have watched it for years now, so to be a part of it would be a memorable feeling.”
