Rooney Focuses On Clash With Liverpool

Wayne Rooney has warned Liverpool he is coming for them this weekend on the back of his record-breaking England exploits.

Rooney is yet to register his first Premier League goal for Manchester United this season, but two in two internationals in the last week took him past Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time England record of 49 goals.

That achievement has already been processed and put to one side, though, and the focus now is on giving Louis van Gaal a third straight victory over United's bitterest rivals.

"To achieve what I have, I would be lying if I said it didn't put a spring in my step and make you want to carry on scoring," said Rooney ahead of the showdown at Old Trafford.

"I am very happy and grateful, but I go back to Manchester, get back into training and start focusing on Liverpool. Hopefully getting two goals in the last two games will mean I continue scoring.

"There's no better game to go into than Liverpool at home after losing our last game [at Swansea]. It is a game we have to win and it's something I'm looking forward to."

Rooney also revealed Charlton had been among the first people to send him a message of congratulations after he became the first Englishman to score 50 international goals.

And, according to United defender Chris Smalling, Rooney will be "flying" when he returns to Old Trafford.

"If you come back off a good performance and breaking a record, it can only be good for motivation and confidence and I think we will see a flying Wayne Rooney come Saturday," Smalling said.

"Scoring in the last two games and his performances have been good - it will only lead to more."
