Van Gaal: Time To Prove Ourselves

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has urged his players to show the quality required to perform in the Champions League, ahead of his side's clash with PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

The Dutch manager, who is expecting a stern test in the Phillips Stadion, believes his side must demonstrate the ability to win against some of the continent's best sides, starting with the Eredivisie champions.

“We have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches at the highest level in my opinion - that is the challenge for us now,” Louis told journalists at his pre-match press conference in Eindhoven.

"Last year we were fourth in the Premier League and because of that we qualified for the Champions League, but now we have to show we can play at this level. I don't know if we can, I have to wait and see."

Although a draw in a tough away tie such as this would be deemed to be a decent result, the boss has victory in his sights, having endured mixed results in his previous matches against PSV.

“For me it's a difficult ground to go,” van Gaal commented. “I didn't win so much here, not with Barcelona, or with Ajax. However I think I did win with AZ Alkmaar.

“A draw away is always a good result in my opinion - but I want to win. The first match is always very important and the same is also true for PSV. I’ll be playing with my best team, as I always do.”
