Herrera Praises Fighting Spirit
Ander Herrera believes Manchester United can be a match for anyone if his team-mates can replicate the performance that inspired Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Everton.
The Spanish midfielder scored the second goal as the Reds secured a first victory at Everton in four seasons and he believes the recent defeat against Arsenal was the catalyst for such an emphatic victory.
Speaking after his Man of the Match performance against the Toffees on Saturday, the 26-year-old told MUTV: “If we keep playing like this we can beat everybody. We showed everyone that Manchester United are here and that we are here to fight for everything.
“When you lose the way that we did against Arsenal then we couldn’t wait for this game. I think the first 20 minutes today were fantastic and this was the way we had to react. When you have to fight for everything you have to play like we did.”
Herrera was also quick to praise the efforts of Marcos Rojo for his impact on the game and was grateful towards the Argentinian for helping him build upon Morgan Schneiderlin’s opening goal.
“It was a fantastic cross [for Herrera's goal], I said thank you to him! I remember in one of my last games for Athletic Bilbao I scored my last goal for the club with a header against Sevilla. Scoring with a header is one of the things I like to do most, and in England even more.”
Captain Wayne Rooney finished the scoring for United on his return to former club Everton and Herrera believes the Englishman’s determination was pivotal in the victory.
“He did great work for us. He is very important for England and also for us. When you have your captain in good form, scoring goals and if he is happy then it is very important for us. He is our leader, the best English player in history, so we have to enjoy him and it is going to help us a lot.”
United’s attention now moves on to Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash at CSKA Moscow and Herrera believes it is crucial the players don’t lose focus before the tie.
“We are very proud, we are very happy for this victory but we don’t have too much time to enjoy this,” he explained to MUTV. “We have to go to Russia in the week and the group is still very equal.”
