Bastian: We Must Prove Ourselves
Bastian Schweinsteiger insists his Manchester United team-mates feel calm and unburdened by pressure ahead of Tuesday’s decisive UEFA Champions League match against Wolfsburg.
Louis van Gaal's men must beat the Bundesliga side to guarantee qualification from Group B, or at least secure a draw and hope that PSV Eindhoven do not defeat CSKA Moscow in the Netherlands.
The Dutch champions can progress ahead of United if they secure a better result than the Reds on the night, which would then see Schweinsteiger and his team-mates entered into the Europa League.
Bastian is the most experienced player in European competition on this trip, with captain Wayne Rooney at home in Manchester, recovering from an injury sustained at Leicester City late last month.
While speaking at the pre-match press conference alongside van Gaal, the 31-year-old former European Cup winner with Bayern Munich explained why he’s confident of gleaning a positive result.
“There is no big pressure,” Schweinsteiger told reporters at the Volkswagen Stadium on Monday night. “We are here in Wolfsburg, we know the situation on the scoreboard and we know we need a good result here so we just have to think about our performance and how we can beat Wolfsburg.
“We did it in Manchester and won 2-1 so we want to do it again here in Germany. It will not be as easy as it was at Old Trafford but it’s a challenge. We have to prove ourselves and I’m convinced we’ll make a good game tomorrow evening."
