Champions League: What United Must Do
Manchester United will guarantee progression to the Champions League knockout stages by defeating Group B leaders Wolfsburg tonight, while a draw could also see the Reds through.
All four sides in the group still have something to play for, with PSV Eindhoven needing to better United's result when they host CSKA Moscow in the other game. Here are all the permutations…
- United will qualify as group winners with a victory at the Volkswagen Arena, ensuring a last-16 tie against one of the other group runners-up, with the second leg at Old Trafford.
- A draw would be enough to secure United’s passage, in second place behind Wolfsburg, providing third-placed PSV fail to beat CSKA.
- If United lose then PSV will only need a draw to make it through, thanks to their superior head-to-head record against the Reds – a 2-1 win at the Philips Stadion and a goalless draw at Old Trafford.
- United can finish no lower than third in the group and, should that happen, Louis van Gaal’s men would go into the Europa League.
- CSKA will finish third ahead of PSV on head-to-head (and therefore qualify for the Europa League) with any kind of victory in the Netherlands.
The last time United sealed progress to the Champions League knockout stages with a victory in the final group game was in 2006/07, when the Reds downed Benfica 3-1 at Old Trafford.
And you have to go back to 1996/97 for the last time qualification was secured with a win away from home in the final game – 2-0 at Rapid Vienna.
