Beckenbauer: Manchester United May Tempt Pep Guardiola
Manchester United's global appeal could lure Pep Guardiola to Old Trafford, according to Bayern Munich's honourary president Franz Beckenbauer.
Guardiola, whose current contract with Bayern expires at the end of season, has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks as uncertainty hangs over his future at the Allianz Arena.
With a decision regarding Guardiola's next managerial step yet to be made, a host of European clubs, most notably Manchester City, are reportedly considering an approach for the former Barcelona manager.
And Beckenbauer believes Guardiola will ultimately have his pick of clubs should he decide to leave Bayern, although feels United would be his preferred destination.
"Pep [Guardiola] is interesting for every top club in the world," Beckenbauer told Munich-based newspaper Merkur. "That's just normal.
"He can pick his club and, in terms of popularity, Manchester United might be the number one worldwide."
Louis van Gaal's long-term future at Old Trafford has been plunged into doubt in the wake of United's shock Champions League exit following Tuesday's defeat in Wolfsburg.
And Guardiola has been reportedly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past when the publication Pep Confidential revealed he had been seduced when watching Sir Alex Ferguson's side play at Old Trafford.
"I like the atmosphere here," Guardiola said. "I could see myself coaching here one day."
Meanwhile, Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague reiterates Guardiola is split between committing his future to the Bundesliga giants or embarking on a new venture is his glittering managerial career.
"Bayern have no idea what Pep has decided or whether he has decided," Balague said. "The club wants an answer and they are not getting it."
