Another Record For Rooney

Wayne Rooney's red-hot form at the start of 2016 has earned him another record - the distinction of scoring the most winning goals in Manchester United's history.

The less-heralded landmark was achieved when the skipper's recent efforts against Sheffield United and Liverpool took his tally to 29, two strikes clear of Ryan Giggs in the pecking order.

How are we defining ‘winning goals’?

Any goal that definitively decided a game (e.g. the second goal in a 2-1 victory) or an ‘eventual winner’ in another narrow triumph (e.g. a goal that made it 3-1 in a game United went on to win 3-2).

Who else joins Rooney and Giggs in United's top five?

Ruud van Nistelrooy has 24 match-winning goals to his name, Sir Bobby Charlton has one more on 25 and Brian McClair managed an impressive 26. Sandy Turnbull and Joe Spence could enter this group but their precise tallies - likely to be somewhere in the 20s - are unconfirmed due to a lack of goal times being available for some pre-war matches. However, both men would definitely be some way short of Wayne.

How often has Wayne scored the only goal of a game?

Rooney has scored in 16 different 1-0 wins, the first of which was also at Anfield in 2005, and the total is at least four more than his closest rivals. Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes and Brian McClair achieved it 12 times apiece while long-serving legends Ryan Giggs and Lou Macari are one further back in the list on 11.

Did Rooney's goal on Sunday set another record?

Yes, it meant he has scored more Premier League goals for one club than anybody else. His 176th league strike for the Reds surpasses Thierry Henry's Arsenal tally of 175.

Which other record is Wayne chasing down?

The skipper's strike at Anfield means he's now just seven goals behind Sir Bobby Charlton's remarkable haul of 249 for United in all competitions.
