Keane Forced To Undergo Groin Operation

Will Keane is to undergo surgery on a groin problem sustained in the Emirates FA Cup tie at Shrewsbury Town last month.

The 23-year-old forced his way back into the first-team reckoning and came on as a late substitute at Sunderland before replacing Anthony Martial after 71 minutes of the 3-0 win at Greenhous Meadow.

Although it looked like he would seize his long-awaited opportunity, a left-foot shot cannoned back off a post and left him nursing an injury. Though Keane tried in vain to overcome the issue, he clearly required treatment and was unable to continue, leaving the Reds down to 10 men.

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Keane requires an operation and, frustratingly, faces another spell on the sidelines.

"I have to rotate so, with Marcus Rashford, I have more players who can play in the striker's position," he said. "I have Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Rashford - I had Will Keane but he is injured and shall be operated on. So, when I have more players, I can rotate more and justify that."

Van Gaal, who denied suggestions Rooney also needs an operation, has another long-term striking option in James Wilson, who is out on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion.
