Manchester United Near 1,000 Old Trafford Premier League Goals

Manchester United are on the brink of becoming the first club to score 1,000 goals at home in the Premier League.

United's 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday took their Premier League tally at Old Trafford to 998 goals from 456 home league games and Louis van Gaal's side have the opportunity to pass the landmark on Wednesday night, when Watford visit Old Trafford.

United may have expected to hit the 1,000-goal milestone sooner but have been unusually goal-shy in 2015/16. They have managed just 18 goals in 13 home games this season and have failed to score at all in five Old Trafford fixtures.

That works out as just 1.38 goals per game for Manchester United in home games this season. Overall, United's goals-per-game record is 1.33 in the Premier League this term - way down on their Premier League average of 1.98.

Wayne Rooney holds the record for the most home goals scored by a United player in the Premier League era. The currently injured United skipper has scored 99 times in 181 Old Trafford appearances - well clear of second-placed Paul Scholes, who scored 59 times on home soil.

After United, the next Premier League club closest to hitting 1,000 goals at their home stadium is Arsenal, who are on 911 - although those strikes are split across their old ground Highbury and their new Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea have scored the third-most home goals in the Premier League, hitting the net 893 times at Stamford Bridge.
