De Gea Can Catch Cech
David De Gea will become joint-winner of the Barclays Golden Glove if the Manchester United goalkeeper manages a clean sheet in Tuesday’s rearranged match against Bournemouth.
The annual award is given to the Premier League goalkeeper with the most clean sheets and Petr Cech currently leads the race on 16, following Arsenal’s routine 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
De Gea has 15 shut outs to his name and hopes to register one more when Louis van Gaal’s men host the Cherries at Old Trafford on Tuesday, two days after the initial fixture was abandoned.
The Spaniard’s tally could have been higher if he had featured in this season’s first four league games when Sergio Romero deputised against Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Swansea City.
De Gea is yet to win the Golden Glove award during his Old Trafford career, although he has been named in the PFA Team of the Year on three occasions. The last Reds goalkeeper to take home the prize was Dutch icon Edwin van der Sar, after he kept 21 clean sheets during the 2008/09 season.
Should Cech retain his lead, the Arsenal stopper will become the first goalkeeper to win it with two different clubs following his previous success with former employers Chelsea.
