Rooney: Rashford Deserves His Rewards
Wayne Rooney believes Marcus Rashford deserves all of the accolades and recognition that he has received throughout his incredible debut season at Manchester United, including his recent call-up to England's Euro 2016 preliminary squad.
Rashford netted his eighth goal in 17 games during the final Barclays Premier League match of the 2015/16 season against Bournemouth on Tuesday, as the Reds signed off with a 3-1 win.
The 18-year-old striker produced a lovely dummy for Rooney to open the scoring against the Cherries, before firing home an excellent second goal following nice build-up play from his captain.
Rooney has been hugely impressed by what he’s seen from the Manchester-born forward to date, and says his excellent attitude has been key to his success so far.
“It’s been great to see his attitude for a young lad," Rooney told MUTV. "He’s come in and listened to the manager and the players, and he’s worked hard. He’s got a very good attitude and he fully deserves his chance for Man United and now England.
“He’s in the England squad and I’m sure he’ll give Roy [Hodgson] a difficult decision to make in terms of trying to get into the [final] 23.”
Rooney’s first-half strike was his 100th Premier League goal at Old Trafford and it set United on the way to a deserved victory, which also ensured the Reds will enter next season's Europa League at the group stage rather than having to qualify in July.
All eyes have now turned to Saturday's FA Cup final and the skipper insists it was important to get the job done ahead of the trip to Wembley.
“It was important that we went out and played and gave everything to win the game,” he declared. “I know what it’s like if you try to save yourself and preserve your energy, that’s when you probably tend to pick up injuries. We took the game seriously and that showed in the performance.
“I’m pleased with the 100 goals. It’s always great to score for Manchester United and do so in front of our own fans is always a great feeling.
“Now we can look forward to a recovery day [on Wednesday] and get ready for the final on Saturday.”
