Rooney: We Were Better Than Leicester

Wayne Rooney admitted Manchester United were left “a bit disappointed” after drawing 1-1 with potential champions Leicester City on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal's started the game brightly and took the lead in the eighth minute when Anthony Martial swept home Antonio Valencia’s cross at the back post to notch his 15th goal of the season, becoming the club's outright top scorer this campaign.

Leicester - whose title party was delayed by the draw - equalised nine minutes later when Wes Morgan met a free-kick from ex-United man Danny Drinkwater to nod back past David De Gea.

United skipper Rooney felt the Reds perhaps deserved a little more from the game. “We’re a bit disappointed," he told MUTV. "I felt we were the better team. We knew Leicester would try and make it tough for us, but I thought we played some good stuff today.

“We played at a high tempo and moved the ball quick and it was just a matter of getting that second goal which was missing today. We’re all disappointed and it’s going to be tough now to get in that top four.”

Rooney also paid tribute to the visitors and offered his view that they will be “worthy champions”, if they manage to secure the title. “They’ve been the best team in the league this season and whether it is tomorrow night or next weekend that they win the league, they deserve it," Wayne said. "It’s incredible where they are at the moment; Claudio Ranieri has done a fantastic job.”

Sunday's draw has dented United’s hopes of securing UEFA Champions League football next season, but Rooney says the Reds will carry on fighting until the end.

“We’ve hit good form towards the end of the season and now we’re relying on other teams. It’s going to be tough for [both] Arsenal and Manchester City to drop points [and for us] to get in there.

"We’ll just have to keep working and trying to take maximum points from now to the end of the season and see where we end up.”
