Young: We Will Push For The Title

Ashley Young believes Manchester United can and will mount a serious challenge for the 2016/17 Premier League title under Jose Mourinho.

The versatile 31-year-old came on for the second half of Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Everton in Wayne Rooney's testimonial at Old Trafford, playing on the wing before reverting to left-back.

With the Reds' pre-season campaign over, all attention now switches to this Sunday's Community Shield match against league champions Leicester City at Wembley Stadium.

Asked if United can challenge for major honours this season, Young told MUTV: "Of course we want to do that. Get back to winning ways, winning trophies. A club the size of United should be pushing for the title and I believe, with the squad we've got, we'll be doing that this season.

"In another few days, we've got the Community Shield and it's vitally important everyone gets minutes. Everyone is delighted to get those but I'm not sure how the legs are feeling right now. We're looking forward to Sunday's game now."

Young also paid tribute to Rooney after the skipper enjoyed his special night in front of the United fans.

"He's been a fantastic servant for the club," Young added. "He's a world-class player. In 12 years, with what he's won, I'm sure he wants to add more to it and it's a joy to play alongside him. Of course, it's really about Wayne's foundation and the money raised tonight. I'm sure that will go to good causes.

"He's a massive character off the pitch but especially on it. He shows that hunger and desire to want to go out there and win. To play alongside him is magnificent for me and hopefully there will be many more times that I can do that."
