Mourinho's Verdict On Europa League Win
Manchester United Jose Mourinho was satisfied with his side's 4-1 demolition of Turkish side Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night. Here are the key points from his post-match interview with MUTV…
PLEASED WITH THE PERFORMANCE
"I chose this team because I felt it was the one to win, because after such an intense game on Monday I felt that some of these players would be in better condition to perform. I will start thinking about Chelsea tomorrow. Am I happy with the performance? Yes. Happy with individual performances? Yes. I am happy with the result as well which is the most important thing, because the group is difficult."
DEFENSIVE STABILITY WAS KEY
“The players are good. We kept a certain stability by keeping the goalkeeper and central defenders to give us the stability that we need. The other players were fresh because they didn’t play [on Monday].”
ATTACKING PLAN WORKED
“The profile of the attacking players was to fight against the profile of their defenders. So fast and creative people like [Juan] Mata, [Jesse] Lingard and [Anthony] Martial to open spaces like we did for the two penalties was important.”
WE KNOW HOW GOOD POGBA IS
“This is England. This is English football. One day you are phenomenal and the next you are really bad. We know how good he really is and especially me, along with other football people, know that every top player needs time to adapt to a new league.”
HOME FORM IS KEY
“I think we played well in parts but after we got the fourth goal we stopped, it is natural. I’m never happy to concede a goal but that’s the nature of the players, a lot of changes, so okay that’s acceptable. We have six points and two wins at home now. It’s important to make it nine points from home and get some more away.”
POGBA IS THE FIRST PENALTY TAKER
“The first two goals were two clear penalties. Paul was our selected first taker and we made that decision. He probably didn’t want to repeat himself a couple of minutes later and Martial is also a good penalty taker.”
REDS MUST WAIT ON SMALLING
“He was not okay. He had a bad muscular feeling and because the result was good we made the decision to change it but hopefully he will recover.”
