United Signings Set For Liverpool Match
Manchester United's four summer signings all hope to sample the club's intense rivalry with Liverpool on Monday, when Jose Mourinho’s men will visit Anfield in the Premier League.
While it will be the first time the quartet have played in English football's biggest fixture, they have all previously faced the Merseysiders in their careers, either with former clubs or the Academy in Paul Pogba’s case. Here, we highlight their personal records against Liverpool…
ERIC BAILLY (P1 W1 D0 L0)
Villarreal 1 Liverpool 0 | Europa League | 28 April 2016
The Ivorian tower is the only one of the group who has registered a senior win over Liverpool, after Villarreal’s 1-0 success at Estadio El Madrigal in last season’s Europa League. He started the semi-final first leg and the score was goalless when he was substituted on 76 minutes, prior to Adrian Lopez’s 92nd-minute winner. A thigh injury kept him out of the return fixture at Anfield, a factor that may have helped Jurgen Klopp's men win 3-0 with goals from Bruno Soriano (OG), Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino.
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC (P4 W0 D1 L3)
Liverpool 2 Juventus 1 | Champions League | 5 April 2005
Juventus 0 Liverpool 0 | Champions League | 13 April 2005
Liverpool 2 Inter 0 | Champions League | 19 February 2008
Inter 0 Liverpool 1 | Champions League | 11 March 2008
The iconic Swedish striker has surprisingly not scored in any of his four previous meetings with United's great rivals. The first pair came in the 2004/05 season when he and former club Juventus were beaten in the Champions League quarter-finals. Ibrahimovic struck the crossbar in the first leg at Anfield but eventually lost 2-1, before a goalless draw in Turin concluded an aggregate defeat for the Old Lady.
Ibrahimovic came across Liverpool again in 2007/08, this time with Italian club Internazionale, but his frustrations remained. Rafael Benitez’s side triumphed 2-0 at home thanks to late goals from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard, before winning 1-0 at the San Siro through a Fernando Torres strike.
As the only player who has featured in every United match this season, Zlatan is almost certain to start at Anfield on Monday night and the 35-year-old will be determined to demonstrate his unquestionable quality and improve on those four past encounters with Liverpool.
HENRIKH MKHITARYAN (P2 W0 D1 L1)
Borussia Dortmund 1 Liverpool 1 | Europa League | 7 April 2016
Liverpool 4 Borussia Dortmund 3 | Europa League | 14 April 2016
Mkhitaryan played against Liverpool in last season's Europa League campaign with his former club Borussia Dortmund, and notably against his former manager at the German club, Jurgen Klopp. A 1-1 draw at Westfalenstadion set up a tantalising second leg on Merseyside, in which the Bundesliga side raced into an early lead via goals from Henrikh and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Divock Origi hit back and Marco Reus restored the advantage for the Germans, before the hosts completed a remarkable comeback victory with late goals from Phillipe Coutinho, Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren.
PAUL POGBA
The Frenchman has never played a senior game against Liverpool, but he did face them several times while playing for United’s Academy. Most notably, he was sent off at Anfield in a feisty FA Youth Cup quarter-final in which both teams reached the final whistle with just nine men apiece. Pogba’s dismissal arrived in bizarre circumstances, though, after the referee awarded a second yellow card for an exaggerated run-up to a penalty. His replacement Larnell Cole duly scored the spot-kick during a thrilling 3-2 away win.
