Young: United Have A Plan For Chelsea
Ashley Young says Manchester United have a game plan for Sunday's trip to Chelsea and are determined to find a winning formula for one of the Premier League's most difficult places to visit.
A system devised by United manager Jose Mourinho worked at Liverpool, where Young was drafted into the starting line-up for only the second time this season and the free-scoring hosts were restricted to very few efforts on goal in a 0-0 draw.
The focus is now on Mourinho returning to his former home stadium Stamford Bridge in the away team dugout but he's done it before, with Inter Milan in the Champions League in 2010, and triumphed 1-0 thanks to a Samuel Eto'o goal. It is hoped the Portuguese boss can put one over his former employers again.
"I think there will obviously be a lot of talk going into the game of making sure you know your jobs, making sure we know the game plan," Young told MUTV. "That will be it really. Obviously, you do a few things outside and try to prepare yourself but the main thing is being ready when that kick-off comes and being able to be 100 per cent again.
"I think, as a player, you know your job. You know what the game plan is and we want to go and do that to a T, to be honest. I think we performed extremely well against Liverpool and I'm sure, for Chelsea, the game plan will be set and, if everyone's doing their job, I'm confident we can go out there and get the three points."
As was the case on Merseyside, there has been an intense build-up to the action in West London but Young would prefer to do most of his talking after the 90 minutes is up.
"As I've said before and after the Liverpool game, their players were coming out and speaking about it a lot and the press were all over it as well," he added. "Like you say, it's going to be the same again on Sunday with the manager going back there but, as players, we just concentrate on the game. We don't worry about what's being said in the press or what else is going on.
"You just want to go out there and perform and that's exactly what every player in the squad will be looking to do. As soon as that whistle goes, it's down to what goes on out on that pitch. I've got every confidence in myself, in the team and in the squad as a whole to go out there and perform and get three points and we'll talk after the game."
Young can fill a variety of roles and has been asked to operate at right-back on occasions this term but he does not accept he should be classified as a utility player.
"Of course, I'm an out-and-out winger," he declared. "But I think, in this age in football, you've got to play in different positions. You've got to be able to adapt and I think you've seen over the last couple of years I've been able to do that.
"Many players are able to do that as well. Wherever I'm called upon, I'll give 100 per cent and I do the same in training. I try to give 100 per cent and, touch wood, stay injury free. Everyone in the squad wants to be playing, there's great competition for places, and that's exactly what we'll be trying to do - to be in the team come kick-off."
