Injured Fellaini Back At United
Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed midfielder Marouane Fellaini has returned from international duty to Manchester United because of a calf injury.
The 28-year-old made his 12th Reds appearance of the season on Sunday in the 3-1 Premier League victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, completing a full match in central midfield.
Fellaini then flew out to Belgium to report for international duty but new boss Martinez has since revealed the United man is unable to face the Netherlands in Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match, which could have seen him face club colleagues Daley Blind and Memphis.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Martinez told reporters: “Fellaini picked up an injury against Swansea City and will go back to his club," he said. "We have a core of 24 players which is enough.”
The severity of Fellaini’s problem is yet to be confirmed by United’s medical team and it remains unknown whether the Belgian will be unavailable for next weekend’s match against Arsenal.
