Rooney Issues Apology

Wayne Rooney has apologised to Gareth Southgate and FA technical director Dan Ashworth over images which emerged of him over the weekend which were "inappropriate for someone in his position".

Rooney's behaviour in the wake of the 3-0 win over Scotland last Friday made headlines in The Sun on Wednesday with allegations that the England and Manchester United captain was drinking heavily at a wedding party.

The reports also provoked anger from his club manager Jose Mourinho, when he found out that Rooney had been with members of England's backroom staff into the early hours of Sunday morning.

And the FA has also said it will review what players are allowed to do in their free time with a statement reading: "All England personnel have a responsibility to behave appropriately at all times. We will be reviewing our policy around free time while on international duty."

Rooney missed the 2-2 draw with Spain on Tuesday with a minor knee injury and returned to United for treatment ahead of their Premier League return to action against Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime.

A statement issued on Rooney's behalf read: "Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published today.

"Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.

"Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise.

"He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."
