De Gea: We Must Keep Winning
David De Gea wants Manchester United to extend the run of victories into 2017, after the Reds rounded off 2016 by netting two late goals to defeat Middlesbrough 2-1 on New Year's Eve.
After Grant Leadbitter fired Boro in front with a touch over 20 minutes remaining at Old Trafford, it looked as if the game could slip away from United but De Gea never gave up hope of securing a sixth successive triumph in all competitions.
"We believed in ourselves," the Spanish goalkeeper told MUTV. "We put all the [attacking] players on the pitch, the strikers and the wingers, and we scored two goals and got the three points.
"This is the Manchester United that everyone knows - when you're losing 1-0 with ten minutes to go and score two great goals and win the game."
Confidence is naturally high ahead of today's trip to face West Ham United at the London Stadium, so high that De Gea feels his side can beat anyone.
"Of course [we can win any game], that's what we want. We need to keep it this way, to keep winning. I think that is the key, and to try and play our best football."
The 26-year-old shot-stopper echoed the comments from his team-mate Paul Pogba, when he spoke of his gratitude to the fans who he believed played a crucial part in Saturday's victory.
"Always when we're down and there's not much time left, the fans are always great," said De Gea. "With them behind us we won that game."
The goalkeeper also had words of praise for goalscorer Anthony Martial whose strike kick-started United’s comeback and for Henrikh Mkhitaryan who ended the match in an unfamiliar role.
"Martial played a great game, he’s a good player and we believe a lot in him. And Mkhitaryan did really well at left-back. It was a great comeback by the team."
