Rooney Reveals Next Target
He broke Manchester United's all-time goals record at the weekend and Wayne Rooney has his eyes firmly fixed on another big target with the club - reaching and winning the EFL Cup final.
The Reds are 90 minutes away from a place at Wembley next month and go into Thursday's semi-final second leg against Hull City holding a 2-0 lead, following a first-leg win at Old Trafford.
Rooney's first piece of silverware as a United player was the 2006 League Cup - he scored twice in a 4-0 win over Wigan in the final - and the skipper has his sights set on another triumph in the competition this year.
Asked by MUTV what he felt he still had left to achieve in the game, an ever-determined Rooney declared: "I think the next thing is the League Cup, we want to win it. The final's in February and we've got a game on Thursday night to try and get there.
"Every trophy is great to win in football and it's obviously the next one we can win so that's the focus, certainly on Thursday. We're still in every competition we've entered this season. The Premier League will obviously be tough but in the competitions we're in we feel we've got a good enough squad to push for those titles."
Rooney also discussed his meeting with Sir Bobby Charlton, whose record he broke, after Saturday's match at Stoke and the 31-year-old insists he still has plenty of goals left in him yet.
"Yeah, I do [feel that there is plenty left in the tank]. I'm only 31 and players now are playing for a lot longer. I feel I'm ready to do that. I feel good, fresh, fit and I'm ready to continue playing," he said.
"I appreciated Sir Bobby coming to see me after the game, as he does after every game. He's a huge figure and a legend at Manchester United. Myself and the other players really respect him and enjoy him coming in."
Asked whether anyone will ever match his goals record, Rooney admitted: "You never know but I hope so because obviously I want Manchester United to do well in the future, in the years to come, and if someone's breaking that record, it means that someone has come in and had a good career and done well for Manchester United. I hope someone does but you never know in football."
