Zlatan Leading The Golden Boot Race
Zlatan Ibrahimovic may insist he's unconcerned by individual awards but the Manchester United striker spiced up the race for the Premier League Golden Boot at the weekend by joining Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez in drawing level with Chelsea star Diego Costa.
Ibrahimovic claimed his 14th league goal of the season to secure Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Old Trafford and the 35-year-old is obviously among the favourites to win the top-scorer prize in May. Impressively, the Swede's second-half header against the Merseysiders was also his 13th strike in as many games across all competitions, a superb run that began with a brace at Swansea City on 6 November.
However, our talismanic number nine has reiterated his stance that the the Golden Boot award is not his focus this season. Ibra told reporters after the Liverpool match: “If I can continue to score more goals and help my team then of course I will do it, but I prefer to win the Premier League and the collective trophies than the individual trophies.
“Seeing me winning something and not my team-mates isn't the way I want to have it. I prefer to see my team-mates winning trophies and the individual trophies will follow. That is a second objective, not my main target. I am scoring goals, but if we could be first in the Premier League and I have five goals, the media will be attacking me and saying he cannot do it in Premier League, but I would prefer to have it this way as it’s all about winning as a team. Everybody will talk about what they want. I am here to win.”
Five former United players have won the Premier League Golden Boot award. Dwight Yorke became the first in 1998/99 and the Treble-winner was followed by Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2002/03. Then there was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007/08, Dimitar Berbatov in 2010/11 and Robin van Persie in 2012/13.
While Zlatan's focus is on the bigger picture with United, the top scorers table is an interesting talking point for fans with 17 league fixtures to go. Here is how the race stands at present, after 21 matches played:
