Man. United Owe Monaco £8.4m After Anthony Martial Scores 25th Goal

Manchester United must pay Monaco a further £8.4m (€10m) after Anthony Martial scored a landmark goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

The French forward - who joined United from Monaco in 2015 for an initial fee of £36m (€50m at the time) - opened the scoring for United against the Clarets and it was his 25th goal for the club.

Under the terms of the deal, which were subsequently leaked, that goal triggers a clause which requires United to pay an additional instalment.

United will also be required to pay further instalments of €10m if Martial reaches 25 caps for France - he currently has 15 - or if the 21-year-old is ever nominated for the Ballon d'Or award.

There is also a sell-on clause inserted in the deal, with Monaco due to be paid 50 per cent of any transfer fee between £50m (€60m) and £84 (€100m) United receive for the player.

Martial's goal was his eighth - fifth in the Premier League - of what has at times been a frustrating season under Jose Mourinho. He managed 17 in his debut campaign under Louis van Gaal.

Wayne Rooney added a second soon before half-time to secure all three points for United and close the gap on rivals City, who are currently fourth, to just one point ahead of Thursday's derby at the Etihad Stadium, which is live on Sky Sports.
