What Was Different About Rashford's Goal?

When Marcus Rashford rifled Zlatan Ibrahimovic's pass beyond Jordan Pickford at Sunderland on Sunday, he joined Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney in recording anĀ unusual statistic.

The striker became only the third player to score at a ground in an England home game, away from Wembley and Old Trafford, before going on to find the net at the same venue for the first time in a Manchester United shirt.

Scholes was on the mark for England in a 4-0 thumping of Mexico at Pride Park in May 2001, before netting there the following March for Sir Alex Ferguson's side in a 2-2 draw with Derby County. Rooney was still an Everton player in 2004, the same year he joined United, when bagging a brace in a 6-1 demolition of Iceland at the then City of Manchester Stadium. He has scored seven times at the Etihad Stadium for the Reds.

Back in 1956, Tommy Taylor (3) and Duncan Edwards (2) put Denmark to the sword at Molineux but Taylor had already netted against Wolves on their home patch, while Edwards had only scored in a home clash with the Black Country side a year earlier. Similarly, Dennis Viollet and Bobby Charlton (2) were on the scoresheet at Highbury against Luxembourg in 1961 but both had already notched against Arsenal in the 1950s. Charlton had also already netted in an FA Cup semi-final with Fulham at the north London ground.

More recently, Teddy Sheringham was a scorer at Elland Road against Sweden in 1995 but never found the net against Leeds United for the Reds, with Michael Owen and Alan Smith also netting on domestic grounds for their country before joining United but failing to repeat the trick at the same venues.

Sheringham had already scored at Pride Park for United (in 1997) before joining Scholes on the scoresheet against Mexico, while another man among the goals that day in 2001, David Beckham, scored for the Three Lions at St Mary's, Portman Road and St James' Park but only after doing so for United earlier in his career. He was on target for the Reds away to Southampton in January 2002 before netting there later in the year (October) against Macedonia.

Rooney, of course, was the other scorer against Australia when Rashford grabbed his debut goal in Sunderland last May, but he has previously netted several times at the Stadium of Light for United. The current skipper had previously notched for England at Old Trafford (against Liechtenstein and Denmark) before joining the Reds.
