Young: Why I'm United's Dressing-room DJ
Ashley Young is proud of his position as Manchester United's dressing-room DJ, even if he admits the younger players can sometimes be unsure about his choice of music.
In an exclusive interview with United Review, the official programme for Saturday's Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion, the 31-year-old was asked about the part he plays in motivating players for a match.
"If you ask the boys in the dressing room who should put the music on, I know my name will come up," said Young. "Some people have tried to take over and it’s just not worked. Paul [Pogba] has put his music on sometimes and David [De Gea] put something on... I don't know what that was!"
If the heavy metal favoured by De Gea doesn't have the desired effect, what is it on Young's playlist that proves so popular and ensures the DJ job remains his domain?
"Just a bit of house, funky house, hip-hop," he replied.
"Actually, I went old skool the other day, the 1990s and 2000s. It was old-skool house stuff and it went down well but a few people were looking around, wondering it was. That’s what happens now I’m a senior player. The youngsters are thinking, 'What is this?!"
Young was photographed (above) leading the celebrations in a special dressing room last month, the one United used for the EFL Cup final win over Southampton at Wembley. So is there a tune he would associate, above all others, with that memorable day?
"A particular one?" he replied. "I’m trying to think. No, there wasn’t a particular song, it was a playlist. It’s always a mix on my iPod. I always do it the night before in the hotel. It's not just an off-the-cuff one, this is proper!"
