Houston To Host Manchester Derby On Tour

The venue for this summer's Manchester derby as part of Tour 2017, presented by Aon, has been confirmed as the NRG Stadium in Houston.

United and City will meet for the first time on foreign soil on Thursday 20 July (kick-off 20:30 local time) in the International Champions Cup as both teams continue with preparations for the 2017/18 season.

The venue for the match was announced at a special event in Houston on Monday, with club legend Denis Irwin in attendance for the Reds.

In addition to being the home of the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, NRG Stadium has played host to a number of major sporting events, including two Super Bowls, two NCAA Men’s Final Fours, Copa America, Gold Cup and various top international soccer matches featuring the United States Women’s and Men’s National Teams, the Mexican Men’s National Team and some of the top football clubs in the world.

“The game in Houston gives our large US family of fans another chance to see the team play live,” said United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. “The last time we played in Houston, over 70,000 packed the stadium and we are looking forward to entertaining them again.”

United last played there (in its old guise of Reliant Stadium) in 2010 when the Reds ran out 5-2 winners against the MLS All-Stars. Goals from Federico Macheda (2), Darron Gibson, Tom Cleverley and a debut strike from new signing Javier Hernandez sealed a memorable victory in front of a sell-out crowd.
