Introducing... Angel Gomes

Some fans might be wondering who Angel Gomes is after Jose Mourinho confirmed the 16-year-old is in his plans for Manchester United's final game of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace.

However, Inside United readers will be aware he was the first subject of our Youth Focus feature this season as we looked ahead to the 2016/17 campaign.

With all manner of records waiting to be broken if he does get on the field at Old Trafford on Sunday, we have reproduced our profile of the teen star, who received the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award at Thursday's ceremony.

INTRODUCTION
Angel Gomes is a prodigious talent who has sparkled at the lower age groups for United and looks set to play a key role for the Under-18s this season. Born in London, the son of Gil Gomes – a former Portugal Under-21 international – already has over 20 Academy team appearances under his belt, including FA Youth Cup experience. The first of these came at Middlesbrough in the final game of the 2014/15 season, when he was just 14 years old, and he only turned 16 at the end of August.

POSITION
Clearly, the no.10 slot seems the best fit for the youngster, even though he has appeared in wider roles as well – including on his FA Youth Cup bow as a substitute against QPR. An attacking midfielder whose best work comes offensively, he is often a focal point in the team and seems to revel in the responsibility.

STYLE
The diminutive forward demands possession and likes to be involved, keeping the ball moving with short and long passes. His close control and dribbling skills are sure to entertain any supporter and he can resemble a Brazilian in terms of his movement and confidence. A clever finisher who is also capable of unleashing long-range efforts, he knits attacking moves together and makes things happen.

HIGHLIGHT
Captaining England at Under-16 and Under-17 level is some feat and he also won the MVP award at the Manchester United Premier Cup in 2015, picking up his trophy from ex-Reds defender Gary Pallister. The individual recognition was pretty remarkable due to the fact Tommy Martin’s side finished in 12th place in the competition.

BEST PERFORMANCE
When Newcastle United were put to the sword 7-1 at the Aon Training Complex in April 2016, Gomes had a field day. Not only did he open the scoring but he also supplied a couple of assists and was carving the Magpies’ defence open almost at will with his intelligent through balls and jinking runs.

TRIVIA
Angel's father Gil was also a professional and played for Braga and Salford City, among others, while winning the Under-20 World Cup with Portugal in 1991.
