United's Varela Axed Over Tattoo
Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela has been suspended by loan club Eintracht Frankfurt after defying orders to get a tattoo that has ruled him out of the German Cup final.
Varela, who joined the Bundesliga club last summer, had been in line to feature against Borussia Dortmund in Saturday's showdown.
But the 24-year-old has been axed for what sporting director Fredi Bobic described as "grossly negligent behaviour" after undergoing a procedure to get a tattoo on his right forearm that now needs treatment.
"Contrary to clear instructions from the coach Niko Kovac, Varela had a tattoo, which has now become inflamed," Frankfurt said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Bobic said: "This behaviour is grossly negligent and hurts the entire team.
"Guillermo's path with Eintracht has ended with this action. The club cannot tolerate a player resisting the coach and players ahead of such an important game."
Varela's loan deal had run until June 30 and the right-back had spoken of his hope it would be extended, despite a string of injuries limiting his playing time.
But Bobic warned: "We had already thought about a possible extension of the loan. This is no longer a matter of course.
"Guillermo will be suspended with immediate effect, and he will be given a personal punishment. We are forced to do so by the team with such selfish behaviour."
