Rooney Will Want To Prove Himself
Phil Neville believes Wayne Rooney will want to prove he is still capable of delivering on the big stage when he returns to Old Trafford on Super Sunday.
After 13 years of success at Manchester United, the 31-year-old will return as an Everton player following his summer switch back to his boyhood club.
Neville experienced a similar return as an Everton player when he joined the Toffees after over a decade at United and believes it will be an emotional occasion for Rooney.
He told Sky Sports: "He'll want to score a goal and put on a performance and he'll want Everton to play well. You saw him at Man City, he wanted to show he could still play on the big stage.
"I found it difficult because I'd not known anything else because I didn't know how to act around anyone.
"It was one of those games where I just wanted the 90 minutes to pass and enjoy it after the game.
"I had all my best friends and my brother on the other team and to have to go into the away dressing room was strange, so it took a while for me to enjoy it again, but then I started to really look at when are were playing at Old Trafford.
"I wanted to prove I was good enough to play on that stage and we always gave United a good game.
"Wayne will find it strange and weird but he'll want to play well and for Everton to do well because he won't want to feel like he's taken a step down."
