Views On United's Victory

ManUtd.com has gathered a selection of post-match quotes following Manchester United's comfortable 3-0 victory over FC Basel at Old Trafford.

The Reds made a winning return to the Champions League by easing past Swiss champions FC Basel to top Group A after matchday one of the group phase thanks to goals from Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.

Two of the scorers, and their manager Jose Mourinho, are among the people we've quoted below...

Jose Mourinho: "Three points are important at home. Until 2-0 we were very stable, we played with confidence. After 2-0 everything changed, we stopped playing seriously and stopped making right decisions. We could have put ourselves in trouble."

Romelu Lukaku: "It was a good start but we know ourselves that we can play better than today. I think, after so long not being in the Champions League, it is good for us but we know we have to improve, game after game."

Ashley Young: "We know what the Champions League is like and you need to get points on the board straight away. We set out to do that. At times, we were frustrated but we just had to keep moving the ball. We wanted to get a goal early in the second half and we managed to do that."

Marcus Rashford: "It’s a good feeling to score on my [Champions League] debut. I’m happy with the goal but most of all I’m happy with the three points and it’s a solid performance for us to build on. Every team that we face, they are going to be able to play and cause us problems, so we have to respect them and be able to play in the right manner and try to cause them problems going the other way.”

MUTV's Sammy McIlroy: "A very comfortable win for United. We will face tougher tests along the way but it’s always important to get three points in the first game. To keep a clean sheet from their first real taste of football this season will do Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof the world of good and it will be pleasing for the manager to see them come through without any serious problems. It shows we’ve got a lot of quality in this squad."

FC Basel head coach Raphael Wicky, after losing to United as well as recent domestic games: "I told the team that I'm sure that if we show the same spirit in the future, we’ll soon be where we want to be in the [Swiss] championship."

Fan's view on Twitter – @gupta_rohit: "What a comeback to the Champions League. Special night indeed! Great performance! Let’s go marching on, on, on."
