Key quotes: Jose's media round-up
Jose Mourinho addressed the media in his press conference on Wednesday afternoon as Manchester United prepare to face West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Aside from providing an update on the team news, he was asked about Sir Alex Ferguson and Michael Carrick.
Here are the main points from Mourinho's press conference and his interview with MUTV ahead of Thursday night's match...
PRIVACY AND POSITIVITY FOR SIR ALEX
"His family asked for privacy and that is what I am going to respect. But [as a club] we are positive. We are very, very positive."
CARRICK TO FACE WATFORD
"Our captain will start the match against Watford, in front of our fans. The most important quality is to be a man. M A N. Capitals. He's a proper man and football is not full of them and not just football, society is not full of them. So when you find one of them, you have to value [them] and you have to keep [them] and in this case, it's not about me, it's about the club. The club has had a great man for many, many years playing football and now his body says 'it's enough.' The club and myself, we want to keep the man. Of course, he has qualities that we believe can make him a good coach and there are many ways to do the bridge between player and coaching staff. Some guys prefer to have a couple of years to study. Some guys prefer to go to youth football before they come to first team. In this case, we decided that the bridge could be that bridge. It's just to change shirts, to change dressing rooms and offices and to stop being a player to become an assistant. I think the way I work with my assistants, I give them very good conditions for their evolution and I think Michael can be very positive for us."
HOPING FOR A RESPONSE
“Yes. We need a point to finish second, we need a point to say that only one team was better than us, we need a point to say that 18 teams were not as good as us. We need a point to prove that.”
VIEW ON WEST HAM
“I was surprised by their problems because when I look to the players and the squad, it’s a surprise they are in trouble, so it’s not a surprise they managed to be safe.”
CREDIT TO MOYES
"Every manager that managed to do that [stay up], some like, just to give a couple of examples, like Benitez, like Chris Hughton they start and end the season with the club and they manage to keep them safe in the Premier League. It's a great job. Some other examples of people that got them in the middle of the season and managed to get the points to save them like David, like Roy Hodgson and so many others. All of them that succeeded in that, it's a great job, but there are others that are unfortunately are going to be relegated. They made great jobs. If Carlos [Carvalhal] with Swansea or David Wagner with Huddersfield, if one of them is relegated, I keep saying [it's] a hell of a job, because they both did very well and one of them is going to be relegated, so it's hard to say but in the specifics of David Moyes, the objective was to keep the team in the Premier League and he did it with two matches in hand which is very good."
PRAISE FOR MARKO ARNAUTOVIC
“In Inter, he was an 18 or 19-year-old boy when he arrived, with lots of talent but with space to go. Then he made it, he matured, he’s creative, he’s strong, he’s fast, he’s not afraid to play, he’s quite arrogant but in a positive way, so no surprise.”
