Man-of-the-Match Rashford on Chelsea win

Marcus Rashford has been named Man of the Match after our convincing win over Chelsea.

The forward scored twice in United’s 4-0 beating of Frank Lampard’s Blues and took home 30 per cent of the vote on our Official App, edging out debutants Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire, who received 27 and 25 per cent respectively.

Rashford spoke to MUTV shortly after the conclusion of the game and revealed he was delighted with the way the team started the Premier League campaign.

“The intensity was top notch,” said the 21-year-old, who also made three tackles and won possession back four times to illustrate the other side of his game.

“It didn’t always come off, especially in the final third and especially in the first half, but we stuck at it.

“We kept making runs, we kept making forward passes and, when we lost the ball, we tried to win it back.

“With the baseline, it was a good place to start but, at the same time, there were a lot of things we can improve on for the season. That’s the position you want to be in.”

Rashford opened the scoring for United, converting an 18th-minute penalty after he’d been up-ended in the penalty area by Kurt Zouma.

The forward has now converted all four spot-kicks he’s taken in competitive games for club and country, including shoot-outs, but he insisted that he’s not the Reds’ default taker.

“I’ve said before there are like four or five players who are 100 per cent comfortable in that situation, so, for me, that’s a huge plus,” he added.

“For the keepers, it’s more difficult; they don’t know who’s going to take it and, for sure, they don’t know where the individual can put the ball.

“It’s definitely a good place for the squad to be in, in terms of penalties.”

Rashford, who added his second - and our third - after 67 minutes with a well-taken finish has now scored more Premier League goals than any other United player since making his debut in February 2016.

Echoing Ole’s post-match comments, the England international said there are a number of positives to take but that Reds shouldn’t get too carried away with today’s performance.

“There’s always goals in the team it’s just how consistently we can do it,” he insisted. “The challenge for us now is to continue to do it.

“That’s the bridge between a good team and a world-class team: how consistently they perform.

“We look a lot more solid at the back today and it just shows we’ve done a lot of work defensively over the summer. You feel a bit more assured, especially with the back four.

“That’s shared between the squad, everybody’s improved and I can’t stress enough the strides we’ve taken. It’s about showing it every week now.”
