Memorable United matches at Molineux
Manchester United travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night for our first Premier League away game of the 2019/20 season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to make it two wins from two games so far this campaign, after we got off to a winning start with last weekend’s comprehensive 4-0 victory over Chelsea.
However, Wolves have proved to be tough opponents in recent times and we failed to overcome the Black Country outfit in two away games last season - in the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup.
While our trips to Molineux didn't prove fruitful last term, there have been plenty of enjoyable visits to the ground over the years…
Wolves 2 United 4 - 28 October 1978
The Reds put four past Wolves 41 years ago, during Dave Sexton’s time as manager. Goals from Brian Greenhoff, Jimmy Greenhoff (2) and Joe Jordan ensured we came away with all three points in a six-goal thriller, in which Ken Hibbitt and Steve Daley scored for the hosts. Also on show for United that day were Gordon McQueen, Sammy McIlroy and Lou Macari.
Wolves 0 United 3 - 29 January 2006
Kieran Richardson proved to be an unlikely scorer for the Reds 28 years later, when the midfielder popped up with a brace against Glenn Hoddle’s Wolves team in an FA Cup fourth-round tie. Richardson featured in an unorthodox midfield quartet alongside Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Ji-sung Park. Louis Saha grabbed the other goal for the Reds on the stroke of half-time and helped ease Sir Alex Ferguson’s men into the last 16 of the competition.
Wolves 0 United 1 - 6 March 2010
This wasn't one of our most convincing showings, but a valuable late contribution from Paul Scholes meant the Reds returned from Molineux with a vital victory in the Premier League title race. The midfielder scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute, when he showed great composure to fire the ball into the bottom corner past Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann. It proved to be the 100th Premier League strike of Scholes’s glittering United career and helped moved the Reds back to the top of the table at an important period in the season.
Wolves 0 United 5 - 18 March 2012
Our biggest-ever win at Molineux came at the tail end of the 2011/12 season, with Jonny Evans kicking things off for the Reds by netting from a corner in the 21st minute - his first-ever goal for United. Antonio Valencia bagged a second soon after, before Danny Welbeck extended the winning margin to three just before the interval. Javier Hernandez then grabbed a second-half brace to ensure the travelling fans had a day to remember in the Midlands. It was also our last victory at Wolves' home - let's hope that changes on Monday night.
