Movie Review -- Protege

This is the movie worth watching for!!!

The Story:

Special agent Nick (Daniel Wu), is deep undercover in the heart of Asia's lucrative crime trade as he plays protege to one of the key players in the game, 'Banker' (Andy Lau). In the eight years he has been infiltrating the underworld industry. Nick has amassed enough to indict Banker, but has been ordered to remain undercover and expose the identity of the man behind Banker in order to bring down the entire organization. However, as Nick becomes more trusted and embroiled with Banker's crime family, he finds himself corrupted by the easy money and his new found power. Unable to separate himself from his undercover persona, he immerses himself into his role as a crime figure. In the seedy underbelly of mob culture, where redemption comes at a price and the borders of justice, loyalties and truth are constantly changing, Nick grapples with dangerous choices and finds himself flirting with more than the devil. Protege is a suspense-filled exploartion of the complex relationships and loyalties within the multilayered, international crime syndicates of today.

The Characters:

Andy Lau - "Banker"

Drug lord, nicknamed 'Banker', originally a skilled old school drug manufacturer with low key manners, uses his home electronics business to conceal his status as the major stake holder for Hong Kong's lucrative heroin market. As a result of his congenital diabetes that led to nephrosis, he is considering his possible retirement and plans to hand over the business to trusted subordinate Nick.

Anita Yuen - Banker's Wife

Mother of two daughters with a virtuous facade that masks the hidden knowledge of her husband's true profession as a drug dealer. She has learnt early to be mentally prepared for anything that might happen.

Daniel Wu - Nick

Undercover narcotics agent and henchmen to 'Banker', has closely followed Banker's side for 8 years and has been gradually learning the ropes for entire production and distribution line of their operation. In the process, he forms a deep friendship with Banker that develops between a mentor and his protege, but will have to betray this bond in the final critical moment to complete his mission....

Louis Koo - Husband of Jane

Drug user, musician. After falling off deep end with drugs, has been using his wife and daughter as means to make money in drug deals to feed his habit, afraid of his wife leaving him, employs any means possible to stop her rehabilation from drugs.

Zhang Jing Chu - Jane

Drug addict, single mother. Got into heroin in a futile attempt to prove the power of will over addiction, in trying to convince her junkie husband to kick the habit. Wanting to evade her husband's pestering, she hapharzardly runs away with her daughter. She later meets Nick and finds a delicate solace in each other's loneliness. Attempted with Nick's support to get into rehabiliation, but then becomes entangled again with her husband and heroin, causing Nick to lose faith in her.

Protege premieres on Thursday, 15th February, and is rated NC16 for drug related themes.
