Black Cats Confirm Welbeck Chase

Sunderland assistant manager Eric Black has confirmed the club's interest in Manchester United youngster Danny Welbeck.

The Black Cats have lined up a loan deal for highly-rated Welbeck as they look to bolster their attacking options for next season.

Welbeck spent part of last season on loan at Preston and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes the young forward would be best served with another spell out on loan.

The 19-year-old is currently in America with United on their pre-season tour and Black admits Sunderland will have to wait before tying up a move for Welbeck.

"It's still ongoing," said Black.

"The manager has stated he [Welbeck] is somebody he would certainly like to have in the squad, but Manchester United are in the States at the moment for another couple of weeks, so I don't imagine it will happen in the next week or two."
