Welbeck Poised To Make Sunderland Loan Switch

Manchester United's Danny Welbeck is having a medical at Sunderland ahead of a proposed season-long loan switch.

The 19-year-old England Under-21 striker made his United first-team debut in September 2008 and played in the 2009 Carling Cup final.

"He's a young man but he'll fit into our squad fantastically well," said Sunderland boss Steve Bruce.

"It looks like the formalities are done as long as he comes through the medical and we hope to announce him later on."

Last season Welbeck featured in the Champions League against Besiktas before joining Preston on loan, although after two goals in his first three games, a knee injury brought a premature end to his time at Deepdale.

His proposed arrival would come the day after Trinidad and Tobago striker Kenwyne Jones left Sunderland for Stoke, but Bruce said Welbeck was not a straight replacement for Jones.

"It would be unfair to say that he is the replacement," said Bruce.

"There's still a couple of weeks to go in the market and hopefully the money is there to go and spend it."
