The Match: United v Wigan

United beat Wigan 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Community Shield on Sunday.

Here, we take a deeper look at some of the key issues from the match...

Star men Michael Carrick was named Man of the Match by Sir Geoff Hurst on behalf of the game’s sponsors and the midfielder was certainly in good form. Robin van Persie didn't too badly either, mind you, netting the two vital goals that secured the win. Special mentions must also go to the Patrice Evra, who was involved in both goals, and Ryan Giggs, who continues to defy logic with highly effective displays. It's hard to believe he turns 40 in three months.

Sub-plot Some people will say it’s only the Community Shield but there's no under-estimating the confidence winning a trophy – any trophy – gives the squad. David Moyes will also be delighted to start his career with silverware. The job now is to ensure it's only the first of many.

Game changer The result never looked in doubt from the moment Robin van Persie found Patrice Evra on the left and then rose to meet the Frenchman’s cross in the penalty area. His header went back across goal and past the helpless Scott Carson in the Latics goal. Wigan forced the odd scare at the back from set-pieces, but rarely threatened from open play and it was game over once Robin netted his second just before the hour.

The opposition Wigan huffed and puffed, but they were never going to blow the Red house down. Grant Holt did his best to unsettle captain Nemanja Vidic, but the Serbian knows how to deal with big, strapping centre-forwards who like to throw their weight about. The Latics, relegated to the Championship last season, failed to even test David De Gea in the United goal. Even losing Rafael to an early injury – he was replaced by Chris Smalling - and the disruption that caused to the back four didn't affect United's control of the match. The Reds’ defence would relish more outings like today’s during the 2013/14 campaign.

Move of the match The link-up play between van Persie and Evra was superb for United’s opener, but the second goal also saw Cleverley and Welbeck involved. After Evra had found Cleverley, the midfielder slotted a pass to Welbeck who found van Persie on the edge of the area. His shot may have taken a large deflection off James Perch, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the build-up.

In the stands United outnumbered Wigan's fans by a ratio of 10:1 and there was great support for Ryan Giggs on his 21st outing at Wembley for the Reds. United fans also sang their hearts out for David Moyes.
