Rooney Can Break Records

David Moyes has reiterated his view that Wayne Rooney can etch his name into Manchester United folklore by breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s goal-scoring record.

Rooney is fourth on the list of the club's all-time top scorers and 42 goals behind Charlton, who netted 249 times during his career at Old Trafford. The manager is confident that his in-form striker can surpass the record and position himself at the head of the pantheon.

"There are big things ahead for Wayne and some big targets ahead - he can break Sir Bobby's record," said Moyes in Friday's press conference.

The boss also believes Rooney has the physical attributes needed to enjoy a prolonged career and could possibly register an appearance tally to rival Ryan Giggs who has played 955 times for the Reds – significantly more than any other player. Ahead of what would be Wayne's 500th club match for United and Everton combined, Moyes was asked whether the 28-year-old can emulate his evergreen team-mate Giggs.

“I think he can,” the boss told reporters. “As he gets older, he's adaptable and such a good football player. If he gets older and loses his pace, he can play a bit deeper.

“There are some fantastic legends around this club and Wayne has got a chance of turning out as one of them. He already is but he can get real, real top status here as those targets are not too far away. If he keeps playing well, as he is now, I'm sure he'll get there.

“I believe he will and he can because he's that good and he's a boy who will play for a long time. He's been in the game a long time already but is someone who can go on and play many, many more games. Whether he reaches Giggsy's total is another matter as it's nearly inhuman the amount of games that Ryan has played.”
