Jamie Carragher: Jurgen Klopp Is Ideally Suited To Manchester United Managerial Role

Jurgen Klopp is the 'perfect fit' to replace David Moyes at Manchester United, says Jamie Carragher.

Following the Scotsman's sacking on Tuesday morning, Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal was installed as Sky Bet's favourite to be the next Old Trafford boss and has reportedly expressed an interest in the job.

However, despite Van Gaal's impressive CV, which includes league title triumphs with Barcelona and Bayern Munich and a Champions League victory with Ajax, Sky Sports pundit Carragher says Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp is better suited to United.

"Klopp is a young, up and coming manager, full of energy, full of personality, and the way his teams play is the way you want to see Manchester United play - with pace and energy, going forward, on the front foot," said Carragher.

"Van Gaal is the elder statesman, the one with the experience, the CV, maybe even the ego to take on Manchester United. But with his age, being in the World Cup with Holland when probably Manchester United will want to be signing players, speaking to players, that might prove difficult.

"If it was down to those two or three, with Ryan Giggs, it would be Jurgen Klopp. He's done a great job at Dortmund, almost won the Champions League and I think he'd be a better fit than Louis van Gaal."

On Monday Night Football, Carragher criticised United's laboured possession football in their weekend defeat to Everton. However, he reckons Klopp can return the club to their former philosophy of fast, vibrant, attacking football.

"[Whoever succeeds Moyes] needs to inject pace and energy into this team," he said.

"When I think of that team, I think of power and pace and going for teams - but I watched them at Goodison and it wasn't like watching a Manchester United team. It was slow and it was predictable.

"I think [they need to get] back to the United way of pacey players in wide areas, going for the throat, as they have always done over the last two decades. That's why I think, watching those Dortmund teams, Jurgen Klopp would be the perfect fit."

United have confirmed Giggs will take charge of the club's final four Premier League matches this season.

The midfielder, who was a cornerstone of the Old Trafford outfit during their hugely successful era under Sir Alex Ferguson, has been earmarked as a future United boss.

However, while Carragher is uncertain whether Giggs will get the job in the long run, he reckons the Welshman is the ideal person to take interim control - and should be incorporated into the coaching set-up, regardless of who takes up the managerial vacancy.

"Ryan Giggs won't have experienced this before but if anyone knows the Manchester United way, he's probably the only player who was there at the very start with Sir Alex Ferguson," he said.

"He's taken his coaching badges and obviously wants to be a manager. The days of somebody going from being a player into a big job like that has changed but Giggs, what a great player, knows the club inside out, and if there was any player you were going to look at to take over it would be Ryan Giggs.

"If he has a great end to the season, who knows? But I imagine they'd bring another manager in and try to keep Ryan Giggs as part of the coaching structure."

As for Moyes, the former Liverpool defender is adamant the ousted United boss will return.

Whilst Moyes' reputation has suffered during his time at Old Trafford, Carragher says the Scotsman's work at Everton and Preston proved his credentials and is convinced he will be snapped up by another club in the near future.

"People will say he wasn't up to the job and these seven or eight months have been terrible for him," said Carragher.

"But he did a great job at Everton, he did a great job at Preston and he'll come back as a manager. He will get a job somewhere. He may go abroad or get a job in the Premier League but I'm sure he'll come back.

"Plenty of managers have been sacked. All these big names we're talking about now as taking over at Manchester United - Louis van Gaal has been sacked by different clubs, he was sacked by Bayern Munich, he was sacked in the Dutch job before. It is part of football and David Moyes will come back."
